Epiphany begins on January 6th of each year, but the Seasons' length is variable. What might that variable be? Well, Easter of course. i have noticed a few things:
- In the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) the last weeks of the Season after Epiphany readings are the same readings of the first weeks of Pentecost. i have not looked at the three years of the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL) to see if that is true there.
- That the 6 seasons of the Christian Year can be grouped into two sections of three with those three being related. So the first is Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, i like to call it ACE.
- ACE appears to be about the gift of God given to us, the whole world, in the life of a baby named Jesus. So ACE is an inclusive time for the world and God's people, as God brings himself forward in the life of Christ.
- Season after Epiphany is the only one of two seasons that the name of the season is actually a word that you would hear with a different meaning, which may shed some theological reflection on the Season itself. For example: Wow, that is so true; what an epiphany.
- The Season after Epiphany is also one of two seasons of the Christian Year that has a day of and then followed by the Season after. Pentecost is the other season that is called the day of Pentecost and the Season after Pentecost.
May you cross a creative inkling or epiphany today.
LFS, liz
