We can "what if....." until we are blue in the face the story going on at Penn State. We could discuss the action of various people or groups of people in this story. Part of the reality to this story will be in and out of court for several years to come. i would challenge each of us to see the tragedy of this story not in the legacy of an iconic coach, but the impact these alleged cases of abuse have had on the lives of the abused and those that love and care for them.
i would challenge each of us to take this story as a teachable moment for ourselves and engage more personally and consider some of the issues below:
* Do you know the number to report child abuse in your state/county?
* Do you know what the law is regarding mandatory reporters and expectation of a reasonable adult to report any knowledge of child abuse?
* Have you ever thought through a situation and considered how you hope to handle a situation of what you consider to be alleged child abuse?
* Do you know the legal age of consent for sexual activity in your state?
* Will you consider supporting agencies, such as CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) who work with children and families involved in alleged child abuse or neglect with your time or treasures?
So what if.......we fail to learn from the story and situation at Penn State?
